Before starting with how to work with geothermal technology lets first understand what geothermal power is. Our earth is a big reservoir of energy. It absorbs heat in sun rays and stores it on its surface. This heat or energy is the geothermal energy. The energy is stored at certain temperature and depends on the climate and temperature of the region. There are different sources of the geothermal energy on earth such as underground water reservoirs, aquifers, hot aquifers and many more.

These reservoirs can be used to generate electricity, keep our homes warm during winter and cooler during summers and many such things. The liquid can be circulated through the pipes circulating in the trenches around the house. During winters the water absorbs the heat from the ground. When circulated in the pipes, this water helps to keep our homes warm. During summers the water dissipates the heat to the earth and the cool water when circulated makes our homes cooler.

There are pumps which extract the underground heat during winters. The heat is then passed to the pipes containing water and an anti freeze solution. A refrigerant then further raises the temperature. The heated water at this high temperature is thus made to flow through the building this keeping the temperature warmer during winters. This system of heating is further improved with the water heater and the radiant flow system for melting the snow on the walkways during heavy snowfall.

Similar setup is applied for the commercial buildings but with more elaboration of the pipes and trenches. The pumps are large to extract the heat from the earth but the process is just the same as applied for the small homes and buildings.

Other uses of geothermal energy involve its use in the generation of the electricity. Here the steam from the hot aquifers and geysers is directed to the turbine which is used to drive the generator thus producing electricity. Thus the use of fossil fuel like the coal is completely eliminated. The use of geothermal energy for electricity generation can reduce the dependence on the fossil fuel and other non renewable sources, the reservoir of which are fast disappearing from the earth.

The importance of geothermal energy as a cleaner and cheaper source is been realized. And this realization has lead to the development of the ways by which we can tap this energy and use it in different ways and make our planet a cleaner place to live in.
